What do I call them? 호칭 계산기
Oppa, unnie, hyung, noona, sunbae, or just their name? Add your birthday and theirs (or pick a K-pop idol) and get the word Koreans would actually use, both ways.
Oppa, unnie, hyung, noona: who calls whom
Korean has no single word for "older friend". The word depends on who is speaking as much as on who is being spoken to. These four started as sibling words (older brother, older sister) and now cover friends, classmates, partners and idols who are older than you.
| Speaker | To an older man | To an older woman |
|---|---|---|
| Woman | 오빠 oppa | 언니 eonni (unnie) |
| Man | 형 hyeong (hyung) | 누나 nuna (noona) |
The younger person uses these words; the older person does not use a matching word back. They call you by your name plus 야 or 아 (지우야, 지민아), or refer to you as their 동생 dongsaeng, a younger sibling or friend. Age is counted by birth year, not birthday: someone born in December 1998 is the 오빠 or 언니 of someone born in January 1999, even though they are only weeks apart.
What about same age? 동갑 and 친구
Two people born in the same year are 동갑 donggap, and in Korean only same-age people are strictly 친구 chingu, friends. A 25-year-old and a 27-year-old can be close, but the younger one is still the dongsaeng. Same-age friends call each other by name with 야 or 아 and speak 반말 banmal, casual speech, once one of them suggests it.
The wrinkle is 빠른년생 ppareun nyeonsaeng, the "early" birth year. Up to the 2002 births, children born in January or February started school with the year above, so a person born in February 1998 grew up with the class of 1997 and may still count themselves as 1997. If you meet someone born in January or February of one of those years, ask which year they go by. The calculator flags it when it changes the answer.
At work or school: 선배 and 후배
In schools, universities, clubs and companies, the ladder is about who arrived first, not who was born first. Someone who joined before you is your 선배 seonbae (senior), and you address them as 선배님 seonbae-nim; you are their 후배 hubae (junior). People who joined in the same year are 동기 donggi. A younger colleague who has been there longer is still your seonbae.
Offices add job titles on top: 팀장님 (team leader), 과장님, 대리님, always with 님. Peers use full name plus 씨 ssi. Calling a colleague oppa or unnie at work sounds far too familiar, and between men and women it can read as flirting. Keep those words for after work, and only when you are close.
Can I call my idol oppa?
Yes, and almost everyone does. Fans use the same words they would use for an older friend: female fans call older male idols 오빠 and older female idols 언니, male fans shout 형 and 누나. These are fan-chant staples, and idols use them about each other on camera all the time. If your favourite is younger than you, fans switch to the name with 아 or 야, and an idol who learns a fan is older will happily call them 누나 or 언니.
At a fansign or meet-and-greet, start politely with -요 endings. Comments and fan letters are often in warm, casual speech, and idols are used to it.
Questions people ask
Can a man call someone oppa?
Not in normal use. Oppa is what women and girls call an older man. Men call an older man hyung (형) and an older woman noona (누나). A man saying oppa is a joke or a deliberate bit of aegyo, never the default.
Is it normal to call my boyfriend oppa?
Yes. If he is older, oppa is the standard and affectionate way to address a boyfriend in Korean. If he is younger or the same age, couples use each other's names, or pet names such as jagiya (자기야).
Should I call someone oppa or unnie the first time we meet?
Usually not. At a first meeting use polite speech and either no name at all or their name plus ssi (씨). Oppa, unnie, hyung and noona come once you are friendly, often after the older person suggests it.
What does ppareun nyeonsaeng (빠른년생) mean?
It means an early birth year. Until the change for children born in 2002 and later, Korean children born in January or February started school with the year above. Many of them still count themselves with that older year, so a person born in February 1998 may expect to be friends with people born in 1997.
What do I call someone much older, like a friend's parent?
Oppa, unnie, hyung and noona stretch to roughly one generation. For a friend's parents use eomeonim (어머님) and abeonim (아버님). For an older woman running a restaurant, imo (이모) is warm and common, and sajangnim (사장님) works for any shop owner.
